Regulating Canada’s Nuclear Energy
Waste Management Facilities
Radioactive waste management represents the final stage of the nuclear fuel cycle.
Waste generated from nuclear power plants, uranium operations, research facilities, and medical applications is stored, processed, and safely managed under a strict regulatory framework and is currently stored in safe, secure, and environmentally sound interim facilities.
The CNSC regulates all radioactive waste management activities in Canada, including interim storage facilities and proposed long-term disposal solutions.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is responsible for implementing Canada’s plan for long-term management of used nuclear fuel under the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act (NFWA).
For host communities, waste management facilities may involve long-term land use considerations, environmental monitoring, transportation coordination, emergency preparedness integration, and ongoing public engagement.
