Transportation of Nuclear Substances

Many different materials used in medicine, industry, research, and other sectors need to be moved around the country. Many hundreds of thousands of shipments of these materials are shipped by road, rail, air, and marine routes, and most of these shipments are routine and low‑risk.

The packages used to transport these materials are chosen based on what is being shipped and how much of it there is. The packaging must be designed and tested to make sure it can be handled safely, stays secure during transport, and can withstand normal transport conditions. Transportation routes may pass through or near municipal jurisdictions, making coordination with local emergency services and clear communication with residents important components of municipal preparedness.
