Government Roles

Federal and Provincial Roles in Canada’s Nuclear Sector

In addition to federal nuclear regulation by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), a number of federal and provincial departments and agencies play important roles in nuclear energy policy, impact assessment, project coordination, and long-term planning.

For nuclear host communities, these processes often occur in parallel with CNSC licensing activities, particularly for large or complex projects. Understanding how these responsibilities are distributed across governments helps municipalities anticipate decision points, coordinate effectively, and engage with the appropriate authorities.

Understanding how federal and provincial responsibilities intersect allows municipalities the opportunity to engage more effectively in nuclear-related decision-making and long-term planning.
