Nuclear Framework
Why Nuclear Regulation Matters to Host Communities
Although nuclear host communities do not regulate nuclear facilities, federal nuclear regulatory decisions can have direct and indirect implications at the local level. These may include construction and refurbishment schedules, emergency planning requirements, environmental monitoring programs, transportation of nuclear substances, and the availability of public information.
A working understanding of Canada’s nuclear regulatory framework enables municipal and regional governments to:
- anticipate regulatory milestones and associated community interest
- engage early and effectively with proponents and regulators
- understand how public and municipal input is considered in decision-making
- better align municipal planning, emergency preparedness, and communications with regulatory timelines
