About CANHC

Collaboration

CANHC and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) entered into a collaborative arrangement under a CNSC-CANHC Terms of Reference (2023) which establishes a framework for collaboration, information sharing, and mutual awareness related to issues affecting municipal nuclear host communities. The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials in Canada to protect health, safety, security and the environment.  They are also an excellent source for nuclear information.

The Municipal Nuclear Navigation Hub reflects that collaborative approach. It builds on existing CNSC materials and public information while incorporating a municipal lens to help communities better navigate complex regulatory and technical subject matter.  The resource guide also explores further governmental and international nuclear resources notably made available through the International Atomic Energy Agency’s newly formed Global Partnership initiative, which represents CANHC along with various nuclear host community organizations in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe.

The development of this resource has been partially supported through the CNSC’s Capacity Fund, which provides funding to enhance the capacity of organizations and communities to participate effectively in nuclear regulatory processes.

The CNSC remains Canada’s independent nuclear regulator and sole authority responsible for licensing and compliance oversight.
