International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. Its mandate includes promoting nuclear safety, security, safeguards, and the peaceful use of nuclear technologies worldwide. They are located in Vienna, Austria.
Canada participates actively in IAEA activities, including through the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, contributing to international regulatory cooperation and safety and security standards that inform domestic oversight.
For nuclear host communities, the IAEA’s work shapes global best practices in safety, emergency preparedness, security, safeguards, and stakeholder engagement — areas that directly influence Canadian regulatory expectations.
