Regulating Canada’s Nuclear Energy
Import and Export Controls
Canada regulates the import and export of controlled nuclear materials, equipment, and technology under federal legislation and international non-proliferation agreements.
The CNSC implements a licensing and compliance process to ensure that imports and exports conform to regulatory requirements as well as to Canada’s nuclear non-proliferation policy and international obligations and commitments. These controls ensure nuclear materials are used exclusively for peaceful purposes and are properly tracked.
While largely federal in scope, municipalities may encounter local industrial or research activities connected to international nuclear trade.
