Rural Community of Fundy Shores (New Brunswick, Canada)

Mayor George (Denny) Cogswell

Community Overview

The Rural Community of Fundy Shores is located in southwestern New Brunswick along the coast of the Bay of Fundy.

Formed through the amalgamation of several local communities, Fundy Shores is home to a small but vibrant population and plays a key role in New Brunswick’s energy landscape.

Nuclear Presence

Fundy Shores is a nuclear host community and is home to the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station, operated by NB Power.

  • Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLGS) – A CANDU reactor that provides a significant portion of New Brunswick’s electricity and contributes to regional energy reliability and emissions reduction

The facility has undergone a major refurbishment to extend its operating life and continues to play a central role in the province’s energy mix.

In addition to ongoing operations, the Point Lepreau site is under consideration for future nuclear development, including the potential deployment of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies, subject to planning, regulatory review, and government decisions.

Together, these activities reflect Fundy Shores’ role in supporting both current electricity generation and the potential future evolution of nuclear energy in Atlantic Canada.

Role in Supporting the Nuclear Sector

As a nuclear host community, Fundy Shores:

  • Supports the safe and reliable operation of New Brunswick’s only nuclear generating station
  • Works closely with industry, regulators, and government on nuclear-related matters
  • Plays an important role in community engagement and local perspectives on energy development
  • Contributes to regional economic development and workforce stability

Fundy Shores’ experience highlights the important role host communities play in supporting both established nuclear operations and future energy opportunities.
