Mayor Mark Goetz

Community Overview

The Municipality of South Bruce is located in southwestern Ontario within Bruce County. The municipality is a rural community with a strong agricultural base and close ties to neighbouring municipalities that host major nuclear facilities.

South Bruce is situated near the Bruce Nuclear site and is part of a region with a long history of supporting Canada’s nuclear sector.

Nuclear Presence

South Bruce does not currently host nuclear facilities but has played an active role in Canada’s nuclear sector through its participation in the site selection process led by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization for a proposed deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.

The municipality undertook a comprehensive, community-led engagement process, including a local referendum, demonstrating a high level of informed community participation and support for continued engagement in the process.

While the Nuclear Waste Management Organization is currently advancing site selection efforts in the Township of Ignace, South Bruce’s experience reflects a high level of engagement in national discussions related to long-term nuclear waste management.

Role in Supporting the Nuclear Sector

As an engaged and informed community, South Bruce:

  • Participates in national discussions related to long-term nuclear waste management and policy
  • Has demonstrated a community-led approach to decision-making through formal engagement and referendum processes
  • Maintains awareness of regional nuclear activities, including those at the nearby Bruce Nuclear site
  • Contributes to broader understanding of how communities evaluate and consider hosting major nuclear infrastructure

South Bruce’s experience highlights the importance of informed, voluntary community participation in decisions related to Canada’s long-term nuclear future.
