Community Overview

The City of Peterborough is located in central Ontario along the Otonabee River, approximately 125 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

With a population of approximately 85,000 residents, Peterborough is a regional hub for manufacturing, education, and innovation, with a long history of supporting advanced industries.

Nuclear Presence

Peterborough plays an important role in Canada’s nuclear sector through advanced manufacturing, innovation, and nuclear education.

The city is home to facilities operated by BWXT Canada, which support:

  • Nuclear Component Manufacturing – Production of precision components for nuclear reactors, including fuel channel and reactor parts used in CANDU technology
  • Medical Isotope Production – Manufacturing of components used in the production of medical isotopes that support healthcare applications in Canada and globally

Peterborough contributes to Canada’s nuclear education and workforce development ecosystem through partnerships with the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE), supporting the development of highly qualified personnel for the sector.

Together, these activities contribute to Canada’s nuclear supply chain and support both energy generation and health-related applications.

Role in Supporting the Nuclear Sector

As a community supporting nuclear-related industries, Peterborough:

  • Hosts advanced manufacturing facilities that are integral to the nuclear supply chain
  • Supports workforce development through connections to nuclear education and training initiatives
  • Supports a skilled workforce contributing to nuclear engineering and production
  • Plays a role in the development and application of nuclear technologies, including medical isotopes
  • Contributes to economic development through high-value manufacturing and innovation

Peterborough’s experience highlights the important role that manufacturing and innovation hubs play in supporting Canada’s nuclear sector beyond traditional host communities.
