Municipality of Clarington (Ontario, Canada)

Mayor Adrian Foster

Community Overview

The Municipality of Clarington is located in Durham Region in southeastern Ontario, along the north shore of Lake Ontario, approximately one hour east of Toronto.

Home to a mix of urban and rural communities, Clarington has a population of approximately 100,000 residents and plays a significant role in Ontario’s energy landscape and economic development.

Nuclear Presence

Clarington is one of Canada’s most significant nuclear host communities, with a diverse range of facilities and projects that span electricity generation, innovation, and environmental remediation.

The municipality is home to the Darlington Nuclear site, operated by Ontario Power Generation, which includes:

  • Darlington Nuclear Generating Station – A four-unit CANDU facility providing a significant share of Ontario’s electricity
  • Darlington Refurbishment Project – A major multi-year infrastructure project extending the life of the station
  • Darlington Waste Management Facility – Safe, long-term storage of nuclear waste materials
  • Darlington New Nuclear Project – Canada’s first grid-scale Small Modular Reactor (SMR), based on the BWRX-300 technology

In addition to its role in power generation, Clarington is also home to the Port Granby Project, led by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories. This project focuses on the safe, long-term management of historic low-level radioactive waste through the relocation and containment of legacy materials in a modern, engineered facility designed to protect the environment.

Together, these facilities and initiatives reflect Clarington’s role across the full nuclear lifecycle—from clean energy production and innovation to environmental remediation and long-term stewardship

Role in Supporting the Nuclear Sector

As a long-standing nuclear host, Clarington plays a leadership role in Canada’s nuclear sector by:

  • Supporting safe and responsible nuclear operations across the full lifecycle
  • Working closely with regulators, industry, and all levels of government
  • Providing informed local perspective on major energy projects and policies
  • Contributing to economic growth, workforce development, and community well-being

Clarington’s experience reflects the important partnership between host communities and Canada’s nuclear industry.
